With the publication of Decree-Law No. 236/2012 of 31 October, it was given the restructuring of the Institute for Mobility and Land Transport. IP (IMTT, IP), which shall be called the Institute for Mobility and Transport (IMT, IP).

The Institute for Mobility and Transport, IP succeed in the attributions of the former Institute of Road Infrastructure, IP (InIR, IP), the duties of the former Institute for Ports and Maritime Transport, IP (SSTI, IP) - in the field of supervision and regulation the economic activity of commercial ports and maritime transport as well as inland waterway navigation Douro - and the duties of the former Commission on Land Transport Emergency Planning.

As regards the railway sector, taking into account the Community provisions on rail regulation, the choice should be maintained in IMT, IP an organic unit with technical autonomy and functional independence - Railway Regulatory Unit.

Note also the option, in its specificity, making assignments in the maritime and port area from the extinct SSTI, IP to other specific organic unity of the IMT, IP, the Regulation Unit Maritime-Port also equipped with technical autonomy and functional independence.
