The European Statistics Competition (ESC), run by the European Union Statistics Service (Eurostat) and some National Statistical Institutes, will be held for the first time in the 2017/18 academic year, INE of Portugal.

This initiative aims to:
  • Promote students' curiosity and interest in statistics;
  • Encourage teachers to use new materials to teach statistics, increasing the use of official statistical data and the application of acquired statistical knowledge;
  • Show students and teachers the role of statistics in various aspects of society, making it known as a field of study at university level;
  • Promote teamwork and collaboration to achieve common goals.

The European Statistics Competition will have two phases: the first, at the national level, will determine the finalists for the next European level. In both, pupils of the secondary education (category A) and the third cycle of the basic education (category B) can participate. The teams will have up to 3 students + 1 teacher / tutor.

As part of the collaboration between the National Statistics Institute and the School Library Network, library teachers will be directly involved in promoting this competition within schools.

The rules for participation, registration of participants (possible as of November 6, 2017) and the competition calendar are available at: esc2018.ine.pt.

Participants will not need to travel in any of the stages to do the evaluations.

The winners of the European stage in each of the categories will be paid for the awards ceremony at the European Conference of Quality in Official Statistics (Q2018), which will take place in Krakow (Poland) from 26 to 29 June 2018.
