The General Directorate of Cultural Heritage (DGPC) is responsible for the management of cultural heritage in mainland Portugal. An expanded team, covering virtually all technical and scientific fields and structured functionally in central services, based in Lisbon, and Museums, Monuments and Palaces, located in different parts of the country, ensures a wide range of functions and provide a wide range of services.

Its tasks include, among many other fields of activity, the study, research and dissemination of Heritage property, mobile and immaterial, the asset management built architectural and archaeological the territory and cities for carrying out maintenance works along great monuments, the management of the National Museums and monuments classified as World Heritage, for coordinating the Portuguese Museum Network, the documentation and inventory of intangible heritage, going to the interventions of conservation and restoration of mobile and integrated heritage pieces.
