The Portuguese Film Museum Cinematheque is the national body, supervised by the Secretary of State for Culture, whose mission is to safeguard and dissemination of film heritage. It was founded in the early 50s by one of the pioneers of European film archives, Manoel Ribeiro, and became an independent institution in 1980.
